People are constantly coming up with new diet ideas.  It seems that each person has their own view of how to lose weight and eat right.  Some people say to focus on vegetables, while others say you need a certain amount of every type of food.  The most recent diet idea is to avoid carbs.  Even within low carb diets, there are a lot of variations.  It can be difficult to know exactly what you should be eating and what you should avoid.  Numerous experts have come together to come up with a good low carb diet.  It avoids the extreme ideas and offers a lot of variety in your menu.

  • Avoiding Fatty Foods

When you are on a good low carb diet, you can't merely drop all carbs and be done with it.  Your carb intake doesn't have to completely disappear.  You primarily want to focus on limiting your carb intake on a good low carb diet.  Also you don't want to go overboard with the fats.  Being reasonable means choosing foods whose fat content is only made up of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.  All other fats need to be avoided because they lead to weight gain and a higher cholesterol level.

Why not get rid of carbs completely if they are so bad?  Actually carbs aren't bad.  They are a great source of fiber and nutrients that you can't always find in other foods.  So you need some carbs in a good low carb diet.  The problem with carbs are that tend they tend to break down into sugar in the body. So to avoid this problem a good low carb diet means sticking to whole grain carbs.  Avoids products that have the word "enriched" at the top of the ingredients list.  Many "wheat" breads and pastas are like this and it means that they don't have the nutrition that you are looking for.  Instead a good low carb diet consists of carbs that have the words "stone ground" at the top of the ingredients list.  It is important that you read labels to recognize what you are putting in your body.

  • Add Plenty of Veggies

In a good low carb diet, you will not only find reduced carbs and reduced fats, but you also need to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.  When it comes to vegetables, the darker the vegetable, the better it usually is for you.  Try leafy vegetables.  These are a great source of nutrition.  Vegetables like carrots, peas, potatoes, and corn are considered starchy vegetables ands are bad for you for similar reasons that carbs can be bad for you. They do each have good nutritional value, but you don't want to have too much of any of them.

When it comes to fruits, you don't have to be quite as picky with a good low carb diet.  Just make sure that you stick more with fruits other than bananas and pineapple.  For example, bananas are a wonderful source of potassium, but they are high on the glycemic index.  The nice thing about fruit is that they are sweet, like a dessert.  So, next time you have a sweet tooth, grab a piece of fruit instead of a dessert that is high in fat and provides no nutritional value.  With a few simple changes you can enjoy the benefits of a good low carb diet.
